No less than 64 civilians died in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed no less than 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Criminal Expansion

The Red Command group has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police reported more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, along with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a extended probe.

Dozens of the suspects are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are not uncommon in the country prior to significant global gatherings in the country.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is scheduled in the northern city of Belem in the eleventh month.
