Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
