Bluefin Fish Fetches Historic Bid of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 535-pound fish came from the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets domestically and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular figure at the annual first sale.
Referred to as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is famous for submitting substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.
Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the amount," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared in no time."
This new purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another food company, which stated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Swift Service
The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I feel like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year starts," shared one elated patron.
