Food Benefits Set to End for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing Government Closure
Federal agriculture authorities declared this past weekend that SNAP funds through a critical national social assistance programs won't be issued in November amid the persistent federal closure.
Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day
The federal closure had reached its 25th day when the announcement was made, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Congressional Democrats urging the USDA to access contingency funds to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “Now, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.
Millions Affected
Tens of millions of people rely on these food benefits, per federal data. Various areas, including New Mexico, use of SNAP reaches 21% of residents.
A memo obtained by journalists indicated that the department would not access contingency funding for the upcoming payments.
Legislative Deadlock
Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to support and resume government operations.
Comments by the leader of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that the administration could have acted to take earlier action to avoid interruption in payments.
“Officials were able and expected to acted before now to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Rather, officials could opt out for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to support legislation that would reopen the federal government.
Emergency Measures
Executives in Louisiana and Virginia issued emergency declarations this week to free up resources for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
