Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
Summers announced he would withdraw from public duties after legislative body released his frequent correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the board at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and anticipate observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously led the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public messages showed that the economist communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected the economist's decision to step down.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This development comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the US justice department to release its documents on the case.

The measure will afterward proceed to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the legislative panel recently included multiple high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The communications showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to link Summers to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were shared with the wider community, he expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild trust and fix bonds with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist held leadership roles under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties recently on this week, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.

The former official entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
