Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
