PSG Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
