Sir Gareth Southgate Reveals Direction on Mentoring Young People Instead of Returning to Coaching
Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is avoiding a return to football management, explaining that it would be challenging to recreate the special mission he experienced as the national team coach.
Southgate suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the next generation and combating what he called a widespread pessimistic outlook now existing in the country.
Exploring New Avenues Beyond Coaching
During a broadcast discussion, Southgate was asked about speculation linking him with available jobs in the English football and elsewhere.
“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
A Passion for Positive Examples
Leading up to the publication of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, Southgate stated that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for young people, drawing on experiences from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
Southgate maintains that his experience managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds general lessons.
“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”
Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation
Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”
He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”
Common Ground Above Discord
Southgate asserted that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the public discourse often emphasizes division.
“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”
His forthcoming book, titled Dear England, is set to offer further insights on guidance and national identity based on his notable time in football.
