The Chainsaw Man Film Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend
Did Sony repeated their success? Following the triumph of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the $100M milestone internationally, hitting a global total of $108M in its opening frame. The film outperformed Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second week in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9M).
Notable Domestic and Worldwide Performance
Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned $18.2 million domestically after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5M Sunday performance. Overseas, the produced by MAPPA movie earned $14.7 million across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million through Sony distribution ($43.1 million international, $18.2M domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its official box office total.
Benchmarks to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies
Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, comparing the movie's expected results to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in the year 2022 and opened to a similar $18M stateside. This movie's first weekend is in line with that standard, while its $108 million global gross is now positioned a bit short of that movie's over $166 million total earnings. While it is improbable the Reze Arc movie will achieve the numbers of smash success the enormous hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a significant success for the distributor.
Promotional Efforts Boost Performance
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to boost their supremacy at the anime box office. The Reze Arc advertising push launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA presentation, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a significant involvement at New York Comic Con showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, fan raffles, and further MAPPA discussions. Moreover, organizers held an private showing for enthusiasts for moviegoers and content creators as well after the final day of the convention.
Future Prospects
2025 is a major time for Japanese animation, and for Sony, which has an additional anime film debuting this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
