The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
