The star has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the MVT, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's small live music spots.

The star was given the prize on October 16 as his new release his work was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Fender. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, major artists such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

He also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 local spots across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The notion that funds from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has commented.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

When the band earned the trophy in 1996 for their record Different Class, vocalist the singer declared that the act would donate their cash to the organization the charity.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty between a few good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite told the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the local youth club that developed their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients the group donated their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"Winning was ample," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT revealed it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in that location were acquired under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
