Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 forces them to witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle that awaits.
