This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
