Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that winning the World Cup will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to blend into the tactical structures and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's warm embrace.
Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Individual quality is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel discuss valuing the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, finding the back of the net for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on frightening rivals instead of teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Jude just has a competitive streak. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. We all must support him and build an environment which he can [have] his drive against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s final group games against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s style as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel wants him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for a long time. In my view it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that one must look back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where eventually it falls to the duty of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be watching him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an even better one.
