US Military Executes Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American military carried out a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Recent Actions
The statement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has encountered growing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to suggest a wider political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current leadership.
